Florian Eugene Wernette, 95, passed away in Pocatello Sunday morning, Feb. 9, 2014
Florian was born May 5, 1918, on the family farm near Firth to Eugene Poe and Florence Martina Wernette.  He attended St. Margaret’s Catholic Boarding School in Blackfoot and later graduated from Firth High School in 1963.  During World War II, he was employed for a short time at the Willamette Shipyard in Portland, Ore., but he soon returned to work on his parents’ farm and ranch.
In 1944, he made his first land purchase from the Kansas City Life Insurance Co.  Throughout the years he and his wife not only purchased his parents’ farm but also several adjoining properties.
During the summer of 1945, while looking for summer pasture for his cattle near Bone, he met Buelah Opal Beasley, who was spending her vacation from teaching at her parents’ ranch.  The couple were later married on Feb. 5, 1947, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Blackfoot.
In 1954, on his 36th birthday, a farming accident left Florian severely injured with third-degree burns.  With his wife by his side, he spent four months at the Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.  After numerous skin grafts and physical therapy sessions, he was able to return to farming the land he loved.  In 1958, he was elected as chairman of the Firth Farm Bureau and remained an active member of the organization until his later years.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years,Opal; one sister, Irene Anderson of Blackfoot, and brother George (Jerri) Wernette of Reno, Nev.; his five children. Kenneth (Olivia) Wernette of Firth; Marie (Stephen) Fairchild and Florence (Joe) Mattie, all of Pocatello; June (David) Douglas, of Spokane, Wash.; and Richard (Debbie) Wernette of Walla Walla, Wash.; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
