BLACKFOOT — Children from throughout the area gathered in Blackfoot to celebrate friendship, peace and equality for all at the Blackfoot Community Center's "Martin Luther King Day" event on Monday.
The event, sponsored by AmeriCorps, Modern Woodmen Youth Service Clubs and the Blackfoot Community Center (BCC), is the first of its kind in Blackfoot to commemorate MLK Day. Organizers hope it will become an annual event.
Participants enjoyed MLK- and patriotic-themed activities such as crafts, face painting, cookie decorating and games. There were plenty of treats such as popcorn and cotton candy and a chance for kids to get free books and win prizes. And, of course, all day passes for the BCC's famous Playland were available.
Steve Allen of Blackfoot brought his children to the event and said that he made a point to discuss with his children who Martin Luther King was and why his message is relevant today.
