POCATELLO — The Blackfoot Broncos hit the road on Thursday looking to improve upon their undefeated conference record when they faced off with Century at Halliwell Park. Unfortunately, an 8 error binge over the fifth and sixth innings spelled doom as the Diamondbacks upset the Broncos 7-2.
"We didn't even get on the bus right to come here," Blackfoot head coach Kenny Dahle said. "We were fifteen minutes late getting on the bus and throughout the whole day you could just see that we were not focused. Like I told the team afterwards though, we are still a good team. In fact, the only team that has beaten us this year is ourselves. We just need to lock it up and come back strong tomorrow."
Blackfoot had their chances to take an early lead on the Diamondbacks as they loaded the bases in the first inning with just one out. Back-to-back strikeouts thwarted that chance however and then in the second inning Blackfoot once again had runners in scoring position with runners at second and third. Century was able to wriggle free once again however much to the chagrin of the Blackfoot faithful.
"When you get those opportunities early in the game and you don't capitalize you have the tendency to start pressing which is what we started doing in the middle innings," coach Dahle said. "The kid had a good curve ball but the thing that was most disappointing to me was our lack of discipline at the plate."
Indeed, the curve ball was working for the Century pitcher and he threw it often as the Blackfoot hitters struck out 10 times on the day.
Despite that, Blackfoot was still in the game with a strong pitching performance by Colby Pearson as the score stood at 0-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.
An error to begin the frame was a harbinger of things to come though as the Diamondbacks took advantage of 3 Blackfoot fielding miscues in the fifth inning to take a 3-0 lead. Defensive woes spilled over into the sixth inning when Blackfoot committed five errors as the Diamondbacks scored 4 runs without the benefit of a single hit.
"I think that the frustration at the plate kind of spilled over into the field," coach Dahle said. "That's baseball though. Sometimes you are going to have that kind of thing happen."
Blackfoot rallied in the top of the seventh inning with four straight singles by Russel Osborn, Justin Mathie, Brady Trappett and Cody Evans to score a pair of runs for a 7-2 deficit. The rally stalled there however as the Diamondbacks turned a slick double play in the middle of the diamond on a hard hit ball and then got a bang-bang out at first for the final out of the game.
Blackfoot (12-6, 6-1) will look for the season split with the Diamonbacks today when they host Century for a 4:30 game.
