Milton Junior “Jay” Cotterell, 85, of Provo, Utah, passed away Friday, Dec. 9, 2011 at the Courtyard at the Jamestown Enhanced Care and Assisted Living Facility in Provo.
Jay (as he was called by his friends) was born Oct. 16, 1926 in Arimo, Idaho. and moved to Moreland at the early age of 3. He is the son of Milton Hope Cotterell and Gertrude Eva England McKnight. Before the age of 4, Harrison McKnight became his father.
While attending the Moreland High School, World War II started and he joined the Navy. Not long after returning home, he joined the Army and retired at Ft. Bliss, Texas, in 1967 with 20 years of service. As well as being all over the Pacific during WWII, he spent one-and-one-half years in Korea (1955-56) and one year in Vietnam (1965-66),
In 1954 he married Deon Webster Hone, bringing to the marriage two little boys, Steven and Dann, who he raised with loving care. Their marriage was solemnized in the Boise LDS Temple in July of 1987 and their two sons were sealed to them.
Jay was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many positions. The calling he held the longest and enjoyed the most was door greeter every Sunday.
Jay moved to Boise in 1968, and worked at the Idaho State Prison. He retired as a purchasing agent for the prison in 1985. He then drove trucks for L.B. Trucks for nine years. For the next 8 ½ years, he and Deon worked in Boise, Idaho LDS Temple. In 2007, they moved to Cove Point Retirement Center in Provo near their son, Dann.
He is survived by his wife, Deon of Provo, Utah; sons, Steven G. (Lori) Hone of Houston, Texas and Dann W. (Shirley) Hone of Orem, Utah.; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and six brothers and sisters, Velda Blackburn, Eunice Pratt, John McKnight, Myrtle Larsen, Harrison McKnight and Jane Whimpey.
He was preceded in death by James McKnight, Neil McKnight, Reed McKnight, Kent McKnight, Margaret Grubb, Sharlene Gurney and Elmer Cotterell, and one grandson, Joseph E. Hone.
The family would like to give special thanks to the Hawker Funeral Home and to the staff at the Courtyard at Jamestown Enhanced Care and Assisted Living facility in Provo, Utah, for their tender care and kindness to their father.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 19, 2011 at the Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave., Blackfoot, Idaho.
Interment will be in the Groveland Cemetery with military honors presented by the Stewart Hoover Post #23.
