Maverik employees, law enforcement officers and military personnel from across Idaho are teaming to pump gasoline and wash windshields for customers while collecting donations for Special Olympics Idaho. Fueling Dreams for Special Olympics will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday at the Maverik station, 895 W. Bridge St. in Blackfoot.
People can participate in two ways. They can buy icons in Maverik stores through Saturday, Sept. 14, and/or fuel at Maverik on Saturday and Tip the Cop pumping gas.
Law enforcement officers will pump gas and wash windshields for tips.
"We will be working for tips by doing old-fashioned full service," said Bingham County Sheriff 's officer Jake Johnson who works with Special Olympics. "We will be pumping gas and cleaning windshields.
"All tips will go to Special Olympics Idaho," said Johnson.
Fuel sales are not a part of the fundraiser—only tips and icon sales, said Shannon Reece with Special Olympics Idaho.
This is the second year Maverik Fueling Stations have joined with law enforcement officers to Fuel Dreams of Special Olympians. All Maverik stations in Idaho are participating.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) for Special Olympics is the Special Olympics movement's largest grass-root fundraiser and public awareness vehicle in the world. LETR is throughout the United States as well as in 42 other countries, including Australia, the United Kingdom and Korea.
Through special events, such as Fueling Drams, the LETR raises funds so that more Special Olympics athletes can benefit in many areas of their lives through sports training and competition.
Nationwide, over $25,000 was raised for Special Olympics last year through this Fueling Dreams fundraiser, said Johnson. "We hope to top that total this year."
Special Olympics Idaho is a non-profit organization that provides training and athletic competition in 16 Olympic-type sports, year-round and free of charge to over 2,500 children and adults with intellectual disabilities through the state of Idaho.
