Students fired up about reading

October 21, 2010

The Morning News – Katie Harris Firefighters Dave Krumenacker, Bryon Howell, and Luke Barry hold up Jean Marie Blackman Harlow at Stoddard Elementary Wednesday night.

BLACKFOOT – Students at Stoddard Elementary are getting “fired up” about reading this year and local firefighters are helping them.
Stoddard is one of two schools in the Blackfoot School District with an Idaho Reads Vista representative working to promote and increase literacy in the school. Wednesday night Vista representative Annie Tanner told students they were “privileged to meet real heroes from our community” as she introduced a trio of firefighters from the Blackfoot Fire Department. Firefighters Bryan Howell, Luke Barry and Captain Dave Kruemenacker were all on hand throughout the evening.
After Kruemenacker read to the kids, students and their families were invited to meet the firefighters and have their pictures taken with them.
“It is exciting for the kids to have a hero from our community take the time to come and read to them,” said Tanner. “This program is not just about literacy for kids, it is about families getting involved together.”
