BLACKFOOT — First grader Alejandro Pelayo was a little nervous as he climbed into the dental chair in the makeshift dentist office at Stalker Elementary School on Thursday. He said it was the first time he had ever been to a "dentist."
Delta Dental hygienists have been at the school this week offering free dental sealants and fluoride varnish to first and second graders who need them. The dental sealants fill the deep grooves of a child's back teeth where 90 percent of cavities occur; while fluoride varnish helps protect the smooth surface of children's teeth.
Delta Dental of Idaho is a non-profit organization that provides the 'on-site' dental clinics at schools throughout the region that serve low-income families as part of the company's Community Outreach program - focusing on preventative dental treatments for children and adults.
Delta Dental hygienist Natalie Cordon, hygienist assistant Georgia Modroo and clinic aid Tammy Hendricks, who are based out of Idaho Falls, were all on hand to assist at the Stalker clinic and say that "they love their job" working at the schools with the little children.
"We do clinics all over east Idaho," said Cordon. "Pocatello, American Falls, Aberdeen, Idaho Falls and Dubois, just to name a few of the town."
"I love traveling to the different towns," added Modroo. "It's something different everyday.
