Stalker Elementary School received a check for $1,500 from Idaho Power's "Powering Tomorrow Grants" on Monday. Now in its third year, the grant campaign recognizes schools and organizations working toward unique innovative educational programs with grants up to $1,500.
The money will be used to continue the "Learn and Be Fit" exercise program at the school in conjunction with Gold's Gym in Blackfoot.
Gold's Gym fitness instructor Heather Polatis has been coming into the school weekly for the past year with an upbeat, motivating exercise routine that includes music, rhyming, poetry, repetition and math.
Claudia Tremelling, Idaho Power's Community Education Representative for Southeast Idaho came to the school to present the check during a special assembly.
"We at Idaho Power like to give your rewards for doing great things at your school," Tremelling told the student body. "My job is to give you $1,500 today so you can continue to good things like your 'Learn and Be Fit' program."
"We are thrilled to provide these grants at a time when so many organizations are facing budget shortfalls," she said.
The school's secretary, Laurie Kearsley, nominated the school for the award and is pleased that the school received the grant money and will be able to continue the program that promotes physical fitness and brain kinetics.
Principal Hal Silzly said, "We see a need for student fitness, wellness and health and this is one program where we've had 100 percent student participation. We are happy to be able to continue with the program."
Stalker is the only school in Blackfoot (and one of 33 schools in Idaho and Oregon) to receive a grant through the program.
