THOMAS — With family and friends providing support, Makena Shelley of Snake River signed a letter-of-intent to play college basketball on Wednesday.
Shelley will play at Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake, Wash.
"I'm excited for the opportunity to play basketball again," Shelley said. "And I'm excited to get a good education."
Shelley, daughter of Cody and Erin Shelley, said she will likely major in elementary education.
She said the biggest thing she will miss "is playing other sports with my teammates all four years."
Her father, who coaches at Century High School in Pocatello, said Makena seemed to fit nicely into her new team.
"Probably the best thing is she had an opportunity to play with the girls there. She looked like she fit right in," he said.
Shelley is 5-foot-10 and will likely play guard. She averaged 12 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists for the Panthers this past season.
Last year's Big Bend team included players from Ririe, Rexburg, Burley, Paris, Terreton, Downey and Shelley. It finished 16-12 overall and 6-8 in conference play.
