Shelley's Zach Leal slides into second base just ahead of the throw as Idaho Falls' Trent Marvin waits for the ball to arrive during the first game of a doubleheader in Idaho Falls on Tuesday.
After watching their final game of the Idaho Sporting Goods Wood Bat Tournament get cancelled after a four-hour delay thanks in part to a monsoon that blew through Pocatello Saturday night, the Shelley Russets American Legion baseball team took to the field Tuesday.
While not as hot as it has been, the temperature hovered in the low 90’s at Tautphaus Park in Idaho Falls, it was the humidity and the threat of rain that the fans wishing for a quick two games.
As uncomfortable as it was to watch, the Russets' batters seemed to like the conditions just fine.
Shelley scored 13 runs in the first four innings and added four more in the seventh for good measure as the Russets blasted the Idaho Falls Rangers 17-9 and took game two 4-3.
Connor Montgomery led off the game with a single. After hit batter and another single, Shelley had the bases loaded and no one out for cleanup hitter Konnor Gilstrap.
Gilstrap appeared to ground out to second, which would have scored Montgomery from third, but the home plate umpire called interference on the catcher, allowing the run to score and giving Gilstrap first base.
That opened the floodgates for Shelley.
Zach Leal and Braxton Smith each added two-RBI singles as the Russets sent nine batters to the plate, scoring five runs.
Gilstrap plated two more runs in the second with a single and Leal singled home another as the Russets built an 8-0 lead.
The Rangers got two runs in the top of the third, but undaunted Shelley’s offense came out swinging in the fourth.
Shelley tacked on five more runs capitalizing on a Rangers error and stealing home for another as the Russets blew the game open and were on the verge of 10-running an opponent.
Not so fast.
Idaho Falls but together a rally, scoring six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, to get back into the game.
But a two-RBI triple by Josh Peterson and a single by Gilstrap added three more runs to the total, giving the Russets the win.
Gilstrap finished the game 2-for-3 with four RBI. Leal and Smith each added three RBI.
