If you're the owner of a small company looking for safety training, etc., there's a firm in Shelley seeking your business.
David Porter, his wife Catherine, son Jamal and five other employees offer 77 different courses. They range from professional development, industrial safety and nuclear operations training. Their client list includes the Idaho National Laboratory, the Department of Energy and the National Guard Bureau.
"We can customize courses as needed," said David Porter. One of the next courses on their calendar is basic instructor training at their office at 670 North State next Friday.
"We want this to be a place where lots and lots of training is going on," he said of the recently opened Shelley Adult Training Academy. They also have an office in Idaho Falls and another in Augusta, Ga.
"Our motto is 'excellent service at a fair price,'" Porter said.
The Porters, who have been in business 16 years, opened their Idaho office in 2006. They moved their home to Shelley in 2008.
And, with the help of the Bingham Economic Development Corporation, they opened their Shelley office earlier this year.
Originally from Georgia, they came to Idaho in 1979 while David received nuclear training at what is now INL. They left, returned, left and returned before finally staying.
David has a bachelor's degree in environmental engineering from Columbus University. Catherine, who has worked as an engineer's aide, earned that certification from Idaho Vocational and Technology College. She has also worked on a business management degree at Arizona State.
Jamal is a marketing specialist with work experience at Walmart, Albertson's and Best Buy. He has done coursework at Georgia Southern.
"We're a small company but we can do big company-type of things," David said.
"Education is knowledge," he said. "Training is taking that knowledge and targeting it to specific situations."
David noted his personnel will take their training expertise to the client's business location. And, he said, all the classes are offered in Spanish or English as the situation dictates.
