Searchers recover body of Blackfoot man from Snake River

November 1, 2012

Morning New-Lisa Lete Members of Bingham County Search and Rescue and the Bingham County Sheriff Department search the river by Wadsworth Island, west of Blackfoot, off Highway 39, searching for Vaughn Kepler of Blackfoot. Kepler's body was retrieved from the river around 4:30 p.m.

It was a tragic ending to a long day of searching along the Snake River, near Wadworth Island west of Blackfoot, as searchers recovered the body of Vaughn Kepler, 59, of Blackfoot early Thursday evening.
Bingham County Sheriff Dave Johnson said Kepler was reported missing by his family late Wednesday night. Kepler, who reportedly lives near Wadsworth Island, may have gone fishing late in the evening. Neighbors in the area say that when Kepler went missing, family members were were able to account for nearly all of his personal belongings except for his waders and a fishing pole, which led them to believe he had gone to the river.
While it was too dark to begin the search Wednesday night, Johnson said the sheriff's department and Bingham County Search and Rescue started searching the river at the crack of dawn on Thursday, eventually retrieving Kepler's body downstream from the search area around 4:30 p.m.
The investigation into exactly what happened is ongoing.
