School District 55 seeks new legal counsel

January 31, 2013

Blackfoot School District is seeking an Idaho-licensed attorney or firm to serve as general legal counsel and is now accepting proposals for the job.
The district fired attorney Dale Storer in December in the midst of the "Scott Crane separation agreement" debacle and has been temporarily receiving legal counsel from Amy White, an attorney for the Idaho School Board Association.
Chad Struhs, interim superintendent for the district, issued a press release on Thursday describing the position.
It reads: This position involves advising on day-to-day issues, attending meetings and representing the district in litigation matters. Such issues may include but are not limited to personnel matters, school funding and finance, student discipline, due process rights and federal and state statutory applications associated with school districts.
The ideal candidate will have at least three (3) to five (5) years of experience in the areas of education law, employment law and administrative law. Experience working public entities is essential. Strong written and oral communications skills and the ability to develop and maintain professional relations are desired.
Struhs added that proximity to the Blackfoot area to provide immediate assistance and to attend meetings is a consideration.
Interested applicants should provide the following:
-Professional Curriculum Vitae
-Information as to billing rates, including how such rates are calculated and what costs/fees are and are not included in the billing rates.
-Cover letter of interest detailing prior educational and/or public entity representation.
District administrative assistant Margaret Contor said that the job has been posted on the district's Website; however, the district will not officially advertise for the services.
"We have had some individuals express interest and we want to get the word out - we welcome anyone who would like to submit a proposal to provide legal services to the district," Contor said.
All proposals are due no later than 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 15, and should be directed to:
Chad R. Struhs, Interim Superintendent, Blackfoot School District No. 55, 270 E. Bridge St., Blackfoot, ID 83221.
Anyone with questions can contact Struhs or Contor at 208-785-8800.
