Russets steamroll Indians 41-14

September 21, 2013

Shelley's Josh Peterson (12) looks for open ground as two Pocatello defenders give chase. The Russets' Dalton Nelson (85) and Brandon Haddon (58) are intent on blocking opportunities.

SHELLEY — Kaden Schmitt passed for 191 yards and five touchdowns as Shelley pounded Pocatello 41-14 in non-conference play on Friday.
"I've got to give it up to our offensive line," said Schmitt. "They gave me time and gave my receivers time to get open."

Shelley (3-1) bounced back from a 21-0 loss to Manti, Utah, last week.
"Our big focus all week was to make sure our offense produced," said Russets' coach Travis Hobson. "We were all unhappy about last week."
"Last week definitely motivated us," Schmitt said.
"Kaden took it upon himself to take the team on his shoulders this week," Hobson said. "This makes (the loss) sting a hair less."
Shelley got started quickly. Bracken Nelson set the Russets up at the Pocatello 37-yard line with an interception on the Indians' third play from scrimmage. Randy Bauer converted on a 9-yard run four plays later. Schmitt had the big play in the drive, a 21-yard run. He rushed for 115 yards, setting up another score with a 71-yard run.
Shelley marched 73 yards on its second possession of the game, with Schmitt passing 4 yards to Josh Peterson.
Following a fumble recovery at the Pocatello 34, Schmitt and Company took four plays to score. Taylor Lund was the recipient of a 6-yard scoring strike.
Less than a minute later, the Russets were in the end zone again. Spencer Dye set that up with a fumble recovery. Schmitt passed 11 yards to Josh Peterson for the score.
Just before intermission, Pocatello marched from midfield to the Shelley 1-yard-line before Shelley's defense stiffened, stopping the Indians on a fourth-and-one.
Matt Cose caught a 40-yard pass from Jerred Stiffler to set that play up.
The two Indians hooked up for a 67-yard touchdown play in the fourth quarter.
Pocatello (1-3) also got a 2-yard run from Joseph Pollard.
Shelley's other scores came on a 7-yard pass from Schmitt to Bracken Nelson and a 62-yard Schmitt to Dalton Nelson pass.
Shelley rushed for 299 yards to go with Schmitt's 191, giving the Russets 490 yards total offense. Pocatello had 56 yards rushing and 113 passing for 169.
Peterson caught 4 passes for the Russets, good for 69 yards. Dalton Nelson had 3 catches for 73 yards.
Bauer had 83 yards rushing on 12 carries. Jason Hathaway had 47 yards on 6 carries. Jacob Sutherin had 32 yards, also on 6 carries.
