Russets repeat as state champions

November 24, 2013

Shelley’s Jacob Sutherin carries the ball while a Fruitland defender hangs on during the first quarter of the 3A state championship game in Holt Arena Saturday.

POCATELLO — All season long the Shelley Russets have played solid defense, not turned the ball over and most importantly limited penalties.
In Saturday night's 3A state championship game in Holt Arena against Fruitland the Russets continued to play good defense, but the team was flagged for 14 penalties and turned the ball over three times on consecutive possessions spanning two quarters.
But in the end and just like they had done all season the defense kept Fruitland out of the end zone in the fourth quarter and Shelley won their second consecutive state championship with a 17-14 victory.
