Panthers take two from Beavers
AMERICAN FALLS — Familiar foes collided on the diamond Saturday evening as the Snake River Panthers and the American Falls Beavers squared off on the Beavers home field for an American Legion double dip.
At the end of a miserable day weather wise, the Panthers picked up a pair of wins over the Beavers as Cash Cardona struck out 16 would be hitters in game one in a 13-9 win and in the nightcap, Snake River pounded out 13 hits in a 10-6 game which was called when the automatic sprinkler system turned on in the home half of the sixth inning.
"We played through that miserable weather," Coach Monty Cardona said. "We came in here short handed and we were still able to come away with two wins."
Indeed, the Panthers were short handed as they suited up the minimum with just nine players in attendance. In addition, head coach Tom Strickland was unable to attend leaving bench coaches Monty Cardona and Troy Goodwin to lead the charges into battle.
"It was good," Coach Cardona said. "Everybody contributed on both offense and defense today. The boys came out and hit the ball well."
Facing into a bitter cold gale for the entirety of the evening, Snake River handed the ball to Cash Cardona and the crafty right hander turned in a marvelous performance as he struck on 16 in the complete game victory. American Falls did rally late with a 6 run seventh inning but up until that point, Cardona was in complete control.
"Phenomenal," Coach Goodwin said. "His dad won't say it but I will, Cash was phenomenal today."
"It was just another one of those outings like he has done all year," Coach Cardona said. "He goes out and does what we need from him to do to win a ball game and today he did that again."
In the night cap Snake River got offensive as they pounded the Beaver pitching staff for 13 hits for 10 runs. Kaden Schmitt, Travis Robertson, Trey Serr, Konnor Gilstrap and Trey Albertson each had multi hit games as the Panthers cruised into the sixth inning.
After the Panthers had been retired in the sixth, they took to the field for the home half of the inning but that is when a man made rain out came about as the timer on the automatic sprinkling system turned on, sending several fans scurrying for dryer patches of real estate.
When the shut off valve was unfound, the game was called as Snake River completed the Saturday sweep.
Snake River (2-3) will travel to Rexburg today for a double header with Madison beginning at 4 P.M.
