THOMAS — Jacoby Johnson dropped 18 points and the Snake River Panthers led from start to finish in a 68-50 non-conference home victory over South Fremont on Friday evening.
The Panthers got off to a solid start as Brad Coombs dialed long distance for the games first basket and that trey ignited a 12-2 run to open the first quarter and from there, the Panthers never looked back.
"The kids played pretty good, especially early in the game," Snake River head coach Bob Coombs said. "I thought that we did a pretty good job against their triangle offense by getting into the passing lanes and creating turnovers."
While creating offense off of the defense the Panthers also did a good job of taking care of the basketball on their end as they turned the ball over just four times in the entire first half as they steadily built their lead to a 33-17 halftime advantage.
"We did a pretty good job of not turning the ball over tonight until later in the game," Coach Coombs said. "That's one of our keys. Taking care of the ball."
Out of the break Snake River opened with a 12-4 run which pushed the lead out to a comfortable 45-21 advantage. The inside trio of Jacoby Johnson, Cole Rushton and Wyatt Wray were quite effective as they pounded the ball into the low blocks for bucket after bucket.
Rushton had 10 points while Wray tallied 9 in the victory.
South Fremont were far from done however as they responded with a 10-1 run to close the quarter cutting the lead to 46-31 and giving them some momentum entering the fourth and final stanza.
Snake River inserted the rest of their bench to start the fourth quarter as Kade Keller and Trey Albertson took to the floor fresh off of their junior varsity win a little over an hour earlier.
They and the rest of the Panthers then quelled any thought of a comeback by the Cougars as they quickly extended the lead back out to 20.
"We're a pretty deep team and a game like this once in a while is a good thing because we get an opportunity for the young kids to develop and play," Coach Coombs said.
With the win Snake River improves their overall record to 7-4 and they will look to build on that record when they face off with Aberdeen tonight at 7:30 p.m.
The Panthers won the first match up with the Tigers on Aberdeen's home court and will be looking for the season sweep at home.
