BLACKFOOT — Since before Christmas Blackfoot head girls basketball coach Merle Smith stressed how important Tuesday night's game with the top team in 4A the Century Diamondbacks.
For a quarter the Broncos kept the game close, but a hot shooting night from the Diamondbacks Sarah Holt and the low post play of Henny Hearn were too much for the Broncos too overcome as Century cruised to a 59-40 victory.
Blackfoot trailed 14-8 after one quarter and started the second quarter on a 6-0 thanks in part to a pair of steals and layups from Cassandra Clarke to tie the score 14-14.
But that was the closest the Broncos would ever get as Hearn used her 6-foot-2 frame to dominate the low post sparking a 14-4 Diamondbacks run to send Century into the half with a 28-18 lead.
Things did not get much better for the Broncos in the second half as Hearn scored six points in the opening five minutes of the quarter to take a nine point lead into the final quarter.
Normally the second half is when the Broncos Morningrose Tobey begins to establish her hold on the game. The Diamondbacks made sure that would not happen Tuesday night.
Tobey was held to just 10 points and could out with three minutes left in the fourth quarter as Century double teamed her and contested every shot she took.
Holt started of the game with a pair of three pointers for Century, she took over the game in the early part of the fourth quarter.
The Diamondback junior scored 11 of her game-high 21 points in the final quarter as Century blew the game open with a 17-4 run in the opening five minutes of the fourth quarter.
Century pulled its starters for the final minutes of the game which allowed Blackfoot to close the gap that was over 20 points down to the final result of 59-40.
Clarke led Blackfoot with 14 points.
Blackfoot (5-8, 2-2 4A District 5/6) plays at Preston on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
