Michael Dean Palmer, 65, of Pingree, Idaho passed away Monday, Aug. 25, 2014 at Bingham Memorial Hospital in Blackfoot, Idaho.
Michael was born May 14, 1949 in Rexburg, Idaho, the son of Dean Lewis and Juanita May Palmer.
He attended schools in Rigby and graduated from Rigby High School.
Michael served in the Navy during the Vietnam War as a door gunner and a flight nurse. Â
While in the Navy he received nursing training and also received training in Salmon at the hospital where he received his LPN in 1975 while also serving as a deputy sheriff in Lemhi County. Mike was always very community- minded and he saw the need to start the ambulance service in Salmon.
In 1982 He then moved with his family to Loveland, Colorado where he was a mechanic and then did residential home health for children. He also nursed in care centers in Mead and Windsor, Colorado.
After moving back to Idaho in 1994 where he worked at Bingham Memorial Extended care for a few years he then took a job at the State Hospital South until 2001 when he took a retirement.
He loved to do lots of volunteer work for the Catholic Charities, Morning News, and his community. Â
He married Judith Roache from 1971-1976; they later divorced.Â He then married Sharon Schneider from 1980-1987.Â They were also later divorced.Â On Dec. 13, 1996, he married Kathy Anderson Bates.Â Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on Aug. 16, 2005.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, reloading ammunition, the outdoors and working with his cattle.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served in the ward High Priest group.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy Palmer of Pingree;Â five sons, Kenneth Hawkins of Littleton, Colorado; Jimmy Hawkins of Oregon; Diane (Mike) Everett of Milikan, Colorado; Dustin Palmer of Loveland, Colorado; Randy (Dwan) Bates of Blackfoot; Ryan (Carrie) Bates of Whitefish, Montana;Â daughters, Tammy (Charles) Randolph of Gibonsville, Idaho; Sharon Hendricks of Pingree, Idaho and Nita (Clinton) Lane of Firth, Idaho; mother, Juanita Palmer of Pingree;Â sister. Bonnie May Paul of Bullhead City, Arizona;Â and 26 grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014 at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 S. Shilling Ave., Blackfoot, Idaho.Â
The family will meet with friends on Friday, Aug. 29, 2014 from 6-8 p.m. and for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Interment will be in the Riverside-Thomas Cemetery.
