Merlin (Toots) E. Southworth 82 passed away Friday May 13, 2011 at his home following a long lingering illness.
Merlin was born in Pocatello, Idaho to Joseph (Shorty) Edward and Eliza Ann Jackson Southworth. on August 4th 1928.
He was raised on a farm most of his life and acquired a great love for animals and especially horses, which he passed on to his 3 children.
He loved and participated in the rodeos and the high light of the parade every year was when he rode the bucking barrel.Â Maybe he rode the bucking barrel too many times as his back paid the price.
Merlin met his present wife Betty Burt Southworth in 1966. They married in Blackfoot on May 5, 1969. They enjoyed 42 happy years together with their Pomeranians, Ginger and Missy.
Merlin was a hard worker all his life and loved being outdoors.
He was loved by all who knew him.
Merlin worked at the old flower millÂ in Pocatello for many years, and worked for Ray Swanson Ranch for many years. He also worked for Zweigart Meat Packing in Pocatello.
Then when they moved to Blackfoot he worked a Modern Mills in Rockford from 1968 to 1973. He later went to work for Idaho Grimm Growers where he retired in 1983 from back problems.
Merlin is survived by his wife Betty; a son Steven (Lynn) Southworth of Pocatello; daughters, Marsha Brooks of Pocatello and Teresa (Mike) Robbins of Wyoming; eleven grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, MelbaÂ Ward Blackfoot and Darleane (Nyle) Ward and her son Tom of Hurricane, Utah.
Merlin is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Elvin and Jack.
Graveside services will be held at 12 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at the Restlawn Cemetery in Pocatello.
Family will meet with friends Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Hawker funeral home in Blackfoot and on Wednesday from 10-11 a.m.
