Madison sweeps a pair from Blackfoot

July 2, 2014

Blackfoot catcher Tyler Lindsay uses his mask to stop a throw from the outfield from getting by him during the Broncos doubleheader with Madison on Tuesday.

BLACKFOOT — It is getting to the point of the American Legion baseball season where games are coming at a fevered pace and the players are getting less and less time to recover.
Throw in the heat that began to set in on Tuesday and it means the home stretch of the season is going to be a long one for all of the legion teams the remainder of the summer.
Before heading to Jackson Hole on Thursday, the Broncos hosted a doubleheader with Madison on Tuesday and the visiting Cats walked away with a pair of wins 19-12 and 8-2 at Blackfoot High School.
The visiting Cats offense came ready to hit from the start.
Madison put two on the board in the first, four in the second and five in the third, but despite putting 11 runs n the board the Broncos put together a rally of their own in the second.
The Broncos got an RBI single from Kyle Scott, an RBI groundout by Brady Trappett and a bases loaded walk from Russell Osborn. But the innings big blow came from Taylor Pearson.
Pearson took a first pitch fastball and cleared the bases with an RBI triple to left center field.
But just as the Broncos got within five runs the Cats put together a rally of their own.
The Cats got the more runs in the fourth and five in the seventh to end with a total of 19 runs.
Pearson added an RBI single in the fourth, for the first of three RBI hits in the inning before the Broncos, but in the long run not was not enough as the Cats had built too big of a lead.
Jode Stephenson went 5-for-5 in the game for Broncos, Pearson added two hits and five RBI in the game.
In game two the Broncos offense was stifled by the Cats pitching as the were held to just two runs and seven hits.
Madison scored twice in the opening inning. They added two more in the third on a two-run home run by Hayden Leathen.
But it was the four run fourth that proved to be too much for the Broncos to overcome on a hit evening in Blackfoot.
The Broncos scored their two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth as Trappett walked to start the inning and Shad Lewis singled two batters later both scored on miscues by the Cats defense.
But despite having numerous chances to bring home runs the Broncos were unable to get the big hit.
Trappett and Pearson each had two hits in the game for the Broncos.
Blackfoot will take today off before spending the weekend in Jackson Hole at the annual Fourth of July Tournament.
