BLACKFOOT — Foul trouble reared it's ugly head at Blackfoot High School on Tuesday evening and for the home standing Lady Broncos, the trouble was all theirs as they were forced to sit a trio of their starters for a large portion of the first half of play against 5A Madison.
Madison took advantage of that as they poured in 51 first half points en route to an 80-52 win over the Lady Broncos.
"It's tough to sub in when you look down the bench and two of the girls can't play because they don't have enough quarters after playing the J.V. game," Blackfoot head coach Merle Smith. "You get out of your rotation with the foul trouble which get's girls playing in different positions on the floor and Madison took advantage. Once they got on a little bit of a run they got their confidence going and then they hurt us."
Trailing by 28 at the half, Blackfoot came out of the break looking to avoid the dreaded mercy rule and make a run at the Lady Bobcats and they did just that, fighting throughout a second half in which they played dead even with Madison.
At one point they had cut the deficit to 20 but could inch no closer as the first half bulge was simply more than they could overcome.
"Look at the second half," Coach Smith said. "This team may be young but they never give up. I really thought that if we don't have the foul trouble, we could have played this way throughout the whole game. It was encouraging to see them cut the lead down like they did though."
Blackfoot were led by Morningrose Tobey and her 25 points while Mariella Alvarez added 17 in the losing effort.
Next up for Blackfoot (0-9, 0-3) will be a road date at Century on Thursday.
