Local miller receives national award
Tim Carroll, director of milling at Pendleton Flour Mills (PFM) in Blackfoot was named the 2013 Milling Operative of the Year.
He received the award last May during the 117th annual conference and expo of the International Association of Operative Millers. The conference took place in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada.
Sosland Publishing Co.'s "Milling & Baking News" has given this award since 1986. The award recognizes the active milling operative who has made a significant contribution to milling from an operations' point of view.
"Milling companies submit their candidates," Carroll said.
Along with the award, Carroll also received a $1,500 scholarship that will go to the student he selects.
"I just have to find someone who wants to go to Kansas State," he said.
Carroll is following his dad's footsteps in the milling world. His dad, Leo Carroll, was the director of research and development at Quaker Oats Company.
Leo created McDonald's biscuit for Quaker Oats.
"He would bring home big bags of biscuits for us to sample," Carroll said. "Eventually, when my friends came over they would say, 'No more biscuits.'"
Carroll grew up in Barrington, Ill., (north of Chicago) with his parents, two older brothers and three older sisters. He graduated from Barrington High School in 1989 and was active in baseball, basketball and football.
In 1994, Carroll received a B.S. in milling science and management from Kansas State University.
"Eli Whitney, inventor of the cotton gin, also invented the first long flow flour mill," said Carroll. "[Whitney] was brilliant."
There is lots of new technology in milling, he said. "The principal of [milling] is the same but the size and efficiency has changed."
Carroll has worked in milling production in Salina, Kan., St. Louis, Mo., Chattanooga, Tenn., and Lincoln, Neb., before coming to Blackfoot. He was the mill manager for PFM in Blackfoot from 2001-2008 before he was named director of milling.
He is not only the mill manager for PFM in Blackfoot but also for its facilities in Pendleton, Ore., and Honolulu, Hawaii.
Pendleton Flour Mills in Blackfoot is probably the third newest mill in the nation, said Carroll. It has 36 employees, including Carroll.
Flour ground at PFM is transported by rail to both the west and east coasts.
"Companies on the west coast build factories on the east coast and order from us," said Carroll. "They like the consistency of our flour."
On three Fridays in September, people can buy their flour directly from PFM. People need to call ahead so the mill will have enough flour available.
Carroll has two sons, ages 14 and 11, who are very active in baseball this summer.
