Leland Date, 84

Leland “Lee” Date passed away on Sept. 12, 2013 in Idaho Falls. 
He was born Sept. 28, 1928 in Ucon to Tsunijiro “Joe” and Haruko (Harada) Date.
 Lee attended grade school in Shelley and high school in Lewisville.  He lived the majority of his life in Firth, where he farmed.  He also worked in the construction industry and retired from the Monroc Concrete Company in 1990. 
Lee attended Bethel Lutheran Church of Firth and was a member of the Japanese American Citizens League.  He was a United States Army veteran, serving the majority of his time in Monterey, Calif.   
His passions were family, friends, fishing, collecting coins, fishing, collecting and painting rocks, fishing and salt and pepper containers.  He loved working around his house, painting and arranging rocks and other items he had collected to brighten up his farm. 
On Aug. 7, 1965, he married Mary Sugihara and ultimately made their home in Firth, They had one son, Kip Lee Date, who now resides in Arizona.
Survivors include his son, Kip, brother Frank (wife, June) Date of Idaho Falls, and two granddaughters, Tamilyn and Karena Date of South Weber, Utah, along with  numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. 
Lee was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Sugihara); parents, Tsunijiro (Joe) and Haruko (Harada) Date; brother George, and sisters Lillian and Lena (Tanaka)
Services will be held at Field Memorial Cemetery on Monday, Sept. 16 at 11am under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home.  Military rites will be performed by the Bonneville County Veterans Memorial Team and Idaho Honor Guard in Idaho Falls.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hearts for Hospice, 503 S.Woodruff Ave, Idaho Falls, ID 83401.
