Late Bonneville surge paces Lady Bees past Lady Broncos
Morningrose Tobey drives the lane against her Bonneville defender during Thursday nights home game with the Lady Bees.
BLACKFOOT — Down a point entering the fourth quarter of their conference tilt with Bonneville on Thursday evening the Blackfoot Lady Broncos turned to their full court press. That change paid immediate dividends as they turned the Lady Bees over on three straight possessions leading to a quick 6-0 run for a 36-31 lead.
Unfortunately, the Lady Broncos could not seal the deal down the stretch however as Bonneville knocked down 9 of 12 free throw attempts over the final two minutes of play to pull away late for the 50-41 High Country Conference victory.
"That was a big game. We could have sent a message heading into districts," Blackfoot head coach Merle Smith said. "I thought that we controlled the game and if we could have just hit a few of our free throws I think that we could have pulled this one out."
Indeed an 8 for 17 night at the charity stripe certainly didn't help the Lady Broncos cause on the evening but despite that, Blackfoot had more than they're fair share of opportunities to put the game away.
Blackfoot led 23-16 at the half as the game looked nothing like the twenty point loss in the Hive a mere month ago. The biggest difference was the rebounding efforts of the Lady Broncos. Led by Madison Leslie and Madalyne Thomas in the low blocks, Blackfoot more than held their own on the glass which limited Bonneville to one shot on the defensive end and enabled the Lady Broncos multiple shot opportunities on the offensive end.
"Madison played a heck of a game tonight," Coach Smith said. "She rebounded the ball well and played really good defense. We're improving. We're starting to come together and we are starting to run the offense better."
Blackfoot was led offensively by Morningrose Tobey who tallied 13 points on the night while Leslie and Cassandra Clarke each tallied 9 in the loss.
Next up for Blackfoot (1-16, 1-5) is a make up date with Idaho Falls on Saturday evening at Blackfoot High School. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
