SHELLEY — The Shelley Lady Russets and the Firth Lady Cougars closed out their regular season schedule with each other on Tuesday evening and in the end, a 20-2 run over the third and fourth quarters of play proved to be the difference as the home standing Shelley squad prevailed with the 50-41 victory.
Behind a big first half from Bailey Nelson, who tallied 15 of her game high 21 points in the opening half, Firth built a 24-22 halftime advantage. That lead grew to 30-23 with just over two minutes remaining in the third quarter but that is when the tide turned as the Lady Russets closed the third quarter with a 7-0 run, including a three point shot by Kimber Call to tie the game at 30-30 heading to the fourth quarter.
"Kimber hit that shot and we just kind of took a deep breath and settled down a little," Shelley head coach Burke Davis said. "We got our confidence and then Shae hits a three, then Kimber with another and it is just a huge difference playing with confidence rather than hesitant."
Indeed, that confidence led to a 13-2 run to open the fourth quarter, eventually leading to a 43-32 lead when Sam Orme connected on a deep ball.
"Give Shelley credit, they hit some big shots which just kind of stunned us," Firth head coach Sharla Cook said. "Shelley were able to make some adjustments on the defensive end and we will have to take some time addressing that but I thought that my kids played well, they played hard and it was a fun game. It's always a fun game when we play Shelley."
Shelley was led by Kimber Call and Sam Orme who each tallied 13 points in the victory. In addition to Nelsons 21, Firth also got 9 points from Kayla Jensen in the loss.
Both teams will be back in action tonight when Firth (5-2) hosts Aberdeen and Shelley (3-4) travels to Hillcrest.
