Lady Panthers hang their state championship volleyball banner

November 14, 2013

Snake River’s Makena Shelley and Hannah Murdock prepare to hang the team’s state Class 3A volleyball championship banner on the gymnasium wall during an awards assembly at the school on Thursday.

THOMAS — It's been a couple of weeks since Snake River defeated Parma for the championship in the Class 3A state volleyball tournament.
But Makena Shelley and her teammates still have a visual picture of the final moments of that final match at Couer d'Alene High School.

"It was great, unbelievable," said Shelley as she and the rest of the Panthers hung their championship banner on the gymnasium wall during a school assembly on Thursday. "It topped off our senior year.
"(I will always remember) game point of the championship game," Shelley said. "because that was the end of everything."
"We had a good season," said coach Shelli Van Orden. "We were 39-2 with our only losses to 5A Vallivue.
"We had five seniors, so we'll be rebuilding next year, but we have good kids coming through the ranks."
Since 2008, the Panthers have been to state five times and have claimed three championships.
"Winning is a mentality," Van Orden said. "You have to think you're going to win when you walk into the gymnasium. We finally have that."
Team members this year included Marisa Resendiz, Hannah Murdock, Shelley, Sara Goodwin, Taylor Davison, Brylie Bair, Kylee Orr, Josey Carter, Billie Gibson, Madeleine Van Orden, Ashli, Lund and Rylee Miller. Coaches included Van Orden, Johnna Lund, Melissa Polatis and Shaunee Martin.
