Lady Huskies end Lady Cougars season
ST. ANTHONY — The Firth Lady Cougars and the North Fremont Lady Huskies met on the hardwood in a rare Monday night affair with a lot riding on the outcome. The winner guaranteed themselves a shot at the district championship and no worse than a second place finish and a Saturday play in game.
The loser's season was to come to an end and unfortunately for the Firth girls and their faithful fans, the later was just what occurred as North Fremont led from start to finish in a 49-30 victory.
"North Fremont played a great game," Firth head coach Sharla Cook said. "It was as impressive a game as I have seen them play."
First quarter action was a back and forth tug of war with North Fremont winning the quarter 11-9 in a frame in which the lead was never more than three points.
North Fremont extended that lead to six with a bucket and a pair of charity tosses to begin the second quarter and then maintained that cushion heading into the break as the South Fremont irons were unfriendly to the Firth offensive efforts.
"You know every once in a while you have one of these games, unfortunately it was in the district tournament," Coach Cook said. "It was just one of those nights in which we had a difficult time executing what we wanted to do."
Indeed the offensive woes were a combination of an attacking North Fremont defensive effort as they swarmed the post from a compacted zone and Firth shots that rolled off the rim much to the chagrin of the Firth faithful.
Third quarter action created a mountain that the Firth team found difficult to overcome to say the least as North Fremont took a 34-20 lead after a 12-4 quarter of play.
"This was a tough loss but even though we ended our season tonight I really think that we have a great year, in a tough conference," Coach Cook said. "These girls have shown a ton of heart all season long and they are great kids, not just great basketball players but outstanding young ladies. They are champions."
Firth tried to make a run at North Fremont in the fourth quarter but in the end, solid free throw shooting by the Lady Huskies and simply too large a deficit led to the disappointing finale.
"Hopefully a loss to end the season like this will make us hungry for next season," Coach Cook said. "I think that will happen. We have lots of great kids returning."
