Lady Broncos sweep season opening double dip

March 9, 2013

Morningrose Tobey takes the throw at second while team mate Sami MacFee backs up the play on a steal attempt by Reagan Martin during game two of the season opening double header at Snake River on Saturday.

RIVERSIDE — Mother Nature provided a sunny back drop for cross river rivals Blackfoot and Snake River on Saturday afternoon as the respective softball teams squared off on the Lady Panthers home diamond for a double header to open the season for both clubs.
By days end, Blackfoot was more than grateful for the season to begin as they opened 2013 with a double header sweep of the Lady Panthers, 15-1 in game one and then 19-1 in the nightcap.

"Snake River are no slouch of a team, they are a really good club so to come out and have a start like we did today is just fantastic," Blackfoot head coach Matt Chavez said. "It definitely exceeded my expectations. I really thought that I would need to coax our young girls at the plate but that wasn't the case. They came out swinging the bats like old pro's."
Indeed the bats certainly were hot for the Lady Broncos as they swatted 5 dingers in the ball game, including two apiece from both Morningrose Tobey and Mattison Chavez.
Tobey hit both of her home runs in the opening game, in support of herself as she also toed the rubber for the Lady Broncos. Tobey got all the run support that she needed as she shut down the Lady Panther bats, holding the home team to just two hits in the contest, although one of those was a home run from freshman Sara Goodwin.
"Blackfoot hit the ball hard and we missed a few plays that we probably should have made but there is no defending a team when they are hitting the ball like that," Snake River head coach Kay Martin said. "That new girl they got [Tobey], man she's a ball player and then Matti [Chavez] gets up and hits two home runs left handed. There is no defending that. Give them credit, they hit the ball."
Jessica Capson also had a home run in game one as she dialed long distance in a fourth inning in which the Lady Broncos tallied five runs en route to the 15-1 five inning victory.
Capson then got the call in the pitchers circle for game two for the Broncos and the lone Blackfoot senior was sensational as she scattered three hits in her time on the rubber, allowing one run in the second inning.
"I am probably one of the luckiest coaches around to have the pitching one-two punch that I do," coach Chavez said. "Jess and Mo are both tops in the 4A. I will be surprised if anyone can match us with those two. They both have great attitudes and they are both great hitters in addition to being great pitchers."
Chelsey Martin had two of those three hits for the Lady Panthers, including a third inning double.
Offensively the Lady Broncos continued their assault on the softball as they pounded out 20 hits in game two, including a pair of home runs from Mattison Chavez. Chavez hit a three run dinger in the third inning as Blackfoot batted around and scored 10 runs. In the fourth inning, Chavez topped that effort with a grand slam over the centerfield fence as Blackfoot batted around once again, scoring 7 runs to enact the mercy rule.
"We're playing clear to the fence and then their younger girls are hitting it just over the infield so we just didn't outguess that but it was a good day to get out and play some ball other than looking at the lines in the gym," coach Martin said. "Really though, you can't say anything. You just aren't going to win many ball games if the team your playing are hitting the ball like that. They crushed the ball today. Blackfoot's got a good team. I see them doing well this year."
Tobey added a double and a triple in game two and Madison Leslie added a pair of doubles in a game in which every starter had at least one hit.
Next up for Blackfoot (2-0) will be a home double header with Madison on Wednesday beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Snake River (0-2) will also be at home on Wednesday when they welcome Soda Springs to town for a 4:30 ball game.
