IDAHO FALLS — The Blackfoot Lady Broncos closed out the regular season on Thursday evening as they swept Rigby 10-3 and 11-0 to complete the undefeated conference slate.
"It's great to come out and accomplish an undefeated regular season and since we are the top seed we get a first round bye which will give us a chance to rest up and heal up a couple of our players," Blackfoot head coach Matt Chavez said.
In game one the Lady Broncos came out swinging with Jessica Capson driving a single to left field in the games first at bat. Capson scored one pitch later when Mattison Chavez roped an RBI triple into the gap for the 1-0 lead. Not to be outdone, Morningrose Tobey showed that it was time for the "mo show" as she drove in Chavez with the first of her three triples in game one for the 2-0 lead. A sacrifice fly by Madison Leslie scored Tobey and before many of the fans had even found a seat, Blackfoot led 3-0.
Blackfoot added three more runs in the top of the third inning as they sent eight hitters to the plate in the uprising. Once again Tobey had the big base knock in the frame with an RBI triple in the left field gap.
After a pair of runs by Rigby Blackfoot came back to the plate in the top of the fourth looking to extend their lead and that is exactly what they did as they pushed three more runs across with a walk by Capson, a single by Chavez, a triple by Tobey and a sacrifice fly by Taylor Beers.
All of the run support did not go spoiled as starting pitcher Jessica Capson was stellar in the circle, throwing a complete game while scattering 9 hits in the 10-3 victory.
"We had some really nice hits today but it was still kind of frustrating because there were four or five balls hit today that would have been home runs on our field or any other regulation softball field," coach Chavez said.
Indeed, playing on the slow pitch fields at Tautphaus Park certainly thwarted the long ball and in game two, Rigby backed their outfielders up which cut down on the extra base hits by the Lady Broncos. In the end, that strategy still didn't slow down the Blackfoot offense however as the Lady Broncos pounded out 11 runs on 15 hits in game two for the 11-0 five inning victory.
Capson, Tobey, the Beers twins, Cassandra Clarke, Sami MacFee and Gentry Carter each picking up two hits apiece in the victory.
With a 2-0 lead heading into the fourth inning Blackfoot was able to extend that lead when Carter led off the inning with a line drive single down the left field line. With two outs in the inning Tobey laid down a perfectly place bunt and on the play, Gentry showed her cat like reflexes as she outfoxed the Lady Trojan defense by escaping a pickle between second and third, eventually diving safely into third base to extend the inning. Madison Leslie took full advantage of that with a 2RBI single to left field to score Carter and Tobey for the 4-0 lead.
In truth, one run would have been more than sufficient in game two with Tobey cutting down the Lady Trojan batters one by one. Tobey was spot on in game two, allowing just 2 hits while striking out 7.
Blackfoot ended the game with a 7 run fifth inning as Blackfoot collected 8 base hits in the inning to end the game after the five innings of play.
Blackfoot (19-1, 10-0) will open district tournament play on Tuesday when they play the winner of the 4/5th place game. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at OK Ward Park in Chubbuck.
