BLACKFOOT — It's postseason time for the area soccer squads and on Saturday morning, the Blackfoot Lady Broncos welcomed Rigby to town for a first round play off game on the pitch.
A little over a week previous the same two teams battled to a 1-1 draw. On Saturday, Blackfoot was having none of that nonsense however as Cassandra Clarke tallied a hat trick and Meaghan Collard backed up her bold Thursday prediction of a victory with a goal of her own in a 4-0 victory over the Lady Trojans.
"I just can't stress enough how well we played as a team today," Blackfoot head coach Scott Stufflebeam said. "Soccer isn't about individuals. It's about team and today the girls came together and everyone stepped up. Our midfield controlled the ball as well as I have seen them all year and our defense was as good as it has been all season."
Blackfoot came out firing right from the opening whistle and that pressure was rewarded in the eleventh minute of play when Cassandra Clarke raced behind the defense for her first tally of the morning.
"To have Cassandra back makes all the difference in the world on the offensive end," Coach Stufflebeam said. "They can't creep their defense up because they know that she can just run right past them and when she is open, she is one of the best shooters that we have ever had here."
Twenty minutes later Clarke found herself on the top of the box where she lobbed a perfectly placed shot over the outstretched hand of the Rigby goal keeper and Blackfoot led 2-0 heading to the half.
Out of the break there was no let up by Blackfoot as they continued their relentless pressure on the Rigby defense and in the sixtieth minute it was Meaghan Collard who dialed in the range as she placed a perfect shot into the corner of the net as Blackfoot celebrated a 3-0 lead.
Collard, who had guaranteed a victory earlier in the week by saying if the Lady Broncos lost she would take the responsibility was all smiles on the play.
Clarke capped the scoring in the last minute of play when she attempted a pass to a streaking Mattison Chavez that went off the fingertips of the Rigby goal keeper and then found its way into the net for the 4-0 final.
Blackfoot will now take on Preston on Tuesday at Bonneville High School with kick off scheduled for 4 p.m.
