Jesse J. Whiting, 90, of Blackfoot passed away Sept. 16, 2013, at Bingham Memorial Hospital in Blackfoot with his family by his side.
Jesse was born June 20, 1923, in Leslie, Idaho, to Lucius Burr and Pearl Johnson Whiting.Â He was raised in the Groveland and Wapello areas and was a member of the first graduating class of Thomas High School.
Jesse was in the U. S. Navy from 1943 through 1946 serving on a PT boat in the Mediterranean including France, Italy and Northern Africa.
On Nov. 9, 1949, Jesse married Erma Jorgensen in Blackfoot.Â They had two children, Lucinda and LeeDel.
Jesse worked on the family farm as a young man and as a carpenter the majority of his life, teaching his skills to many others including his son.Â In his free time, he enjoyed owning horses and horse racing, hunting, fishing, bowling and creating artistic keepsakes in his shop.Â Jess also enjoyed dancing and won first place in a jitterbug contest at the top of Madison Square Garden while in New York with the Navy.Â His keen sense of humor and positive outlook on life will be very much missed.Â
He is survived by his wife, Erma of Blackfoot; daughter, Lucinda (DuWayne) Walker of Pocatello; son, LeeDel Whiting of Riverside; grandchildren, Jona (Tim) Hansen and boys, and Cade Walker; and sisters, Mozelle Hodson of Moses Lake, Wash., and Berniece Murdock of Thomas.
Jesse was preceded in death by his parents, Burr and Pearl; sisters, Othea, Evaline, Edna and Anna; brothers, Lutie, Earl and Roy.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
A funeral service will be held at 11a.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, 2013 at Hawker Funeral Home, 132 South Shilling Avenue in Blackfoot.Â Family will meet with friends and relatives for one hour prior to services at the funeral home.Â Interment will follow at the Groveland Cemetery.Â
