Jeffery Michels, 60, of Meridian and formerly of Blackfoot, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Meridian, Idaho on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014.
Jeff was born in Newport, Rhode Island on Oct. 20, 1953, to Marine Staff Sergeant Lester "Red" Michels and Wanda Michels. He attended grade school with his older brother Steven on Marine Corps bases in South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. Red moved the family to Blackfoot in 1965 when he was deployed to Vietnam.
Jeff graduated from Blackfoot High School in 1971 and went on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree fromÂ Boise State University. He also completed coursework for his Master's Degree in Public Administration.Â Jeff recently retired from the Corrections Corp. of America. He had previously retired from the State of Idaho Department of Probation & Parole after over 25 years service.Â
Jeff loved cars, travel, the outdoors and his family. He was an avid whitewater rafter, snowmobiler, downhill skier, hiker, certified scuba diver, and in the past, dirt bike enthusiast. In his short time retired, he loved to visit friends and family, tinker on his many car projects, and garden on his acre in Meridian. His next travel adventure was to visit Athens and the Greek islands, with friends Ginger Wright and Deborah Mather.Â
Jeff was a happy, generous, kindhearted man, and the rock of his family.Â He was loved by his family, his friends, and will be missed by many.Â He leaves his brother, Steven Michels, (wife Barbara), nephews, William and Christopher , all of Portland, Oregon; brother, Brian Michels of Boise; and sister Leslie Michels of Nampa, nephew Jeremiah and niece, Jessica. Â
Jeff was preceded in death by his father, Red, killed in action in Vietnam, mother Wanda and younger brother, Kevin.Â Â
A graveside memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, 2014 at Grove City Cemetery, under the direction of Hawker Funeral Home. After the services, the family has asked all to join them at the Homestead Family restaurant, to share stories and celebrate Jeff's life.Â Â
