Janice H. Thurman
Janice H. Thurman of Blackfoot, 71, passed away peacefully on Monday, Sept. 20, 2010, while surrounded by family.
She was born on Feb. 12, 1939, in Blackfoot, to Robert and Velma Hansen. With the exception of one year in Salt Lake City, she lived her entire life in Blackfoot, where she was known by many.
She married Ron Thurman in 1961 and together had three sons; they were later divorced. Prior to marriage, she worked for years as a secretary for INEL, which she excelled at due to her amazing typing skills. She later worked as a receptionist for Gate City Real Estate for many years, then spent the rest of her working career as a teacher’s aide at Stoddard Elementary. She loved children and found no more joy than helping them learn and watching them become successful students.
She loved cats, not just her own but those in need of food that would quickly adopt her front porch as a place to get a good meal and some TLC. The word was out, so birds and squirrels also took advantage and would also stop by regularly for a good meal and friendly talk.
She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many positions with great love and devotion with an immense amount of faith that strengthened those who knew her. She loved to sing in the church choir.
She is survived by three sons, Rick (Ann) of Blackfoot, Kevin of Phoenix, Ariz.; and Randy of Austin, Texas; her father, Robert Hansen of Blackfoot; brother Kerry Hansen (Diane) of Idaho Falls; and sister Patricia Fagan (Gerry) of Kent, Wash.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Velma “Tillie” Hansen; two brothers, Jim Hansen and Ross Hansen.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010, at the Blackfoot LDS 11th Ward Chapel, 520 N. Shilling Ave in Blackfoot, with Bishop Michael Inskeep, officiating.
A viewing for family and friends will be held from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
Friday at the church and one hour prior to the services on Saturday.
Burial will follow in the Riverside-Thomas Cemetery.
