Higham wins Von Elm title

June 24, 2013

Tanner Higham hits his shot out of the bushes on the 18th hole of the Blackfoot Municipal Golf Course. Higham won the Von Elm with a score of 144 for the weekend.

BLACKFOOT — When Tanner Higham's tee shot on 18 went left, many including Higham himself thought the ball landed out of bounds.
Higham slammed his club into the ground in frustration as it appeared that his chances of winning the 52nd annual George Von Elm Golf Tournament when going to be all wet.

As the final group made their way down the fairway at 18, three of the balls were in the fairway. After a quick search by all four players, Higham's ball was found under a tree a mere feet from the out of bounds mark.
Higham lasted the ball out the poor lie and into the middle of the green.
A quick two-put later and the 23-year old from Shelley was the Von Elm Champion.
"After pushing my three wood of the tee, I was pretty lucky to have a good lie from underneath that tree," Higham said. "it was like 178 yards an I had a good lie and I hit a pretty good shot."
Higham shot back-to-back 72's to win the tournament.
Quintero finished the round at +1.
It was not just 18 where Higham hit a shot that many including his championship flight group mates, Nick Higham, Effren Quintero, Jr. and Arnulfo Quintero thought was going to be a problem.
On 15 Higham hit a drive that went left off the tee. From the tee box it appeared to be out of bounds left, but when Higham found his ball he was about five yards to the good.
And on the opening hole his drive put him under a tree, but again he was able to find his way out of trouble.
"This is a really good tournament to win, there are a lot good players here," Higham said. "It is a great tournament to win especially after last year."
The Utah State golfer, Higham actually led by as many as two shots after back-to-back birdies on holes five and six. But a double bogey on seven erased that lead.
Tanner's older brother Nick came into the final day leading the championship flight at -1.
He held that score of -1 for the opening nine holes.
But the turn to the back nine was less than kind to Nick.
Five back nine bogies including a quadruple bogey on 12 proved to be too much to over come.
Higham shot 144 for the weekend. Darren Kuhn finished second two strokes back.
George Yowell and Scott Hays tied for first in the first flight with a score of 152. Erine Eggers and Scott Johnson tied for first in the second flight with a score of 153.
Dorsie Sullenger took home the top spot in the third flight. Trent Pincock took the fourth flight with a 163 and Sonny Dixey took the fifth flight with a 145.
