Harriet M. Steffens Anthony, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2014 at the age of 91. She was born in Pocatello, Idaho on Sept. 22, 1922 to Peter H. Steffens and Harriet M. (Esler) Steffens. She was the older sister to four brothers.
She attended school in Blackfoot, Pocatello and California and graduated from Blackfoot High School.
She was married almost 65 years to Verlon N. Anthony of Kimball, Idaho before his passing in 2005.
She enjoyed music, singing, nature, handwork, reading, camping, playing games and dancing. She loved her family and her grandchildren brought her great joy.
She leaves behind a legacy of courage and independence. She also had a bit of a stubborn streak, which ended up serving her well. At the age of 32, with three daughters, ages 14, 12, and 6 months, she suffered a massive stroke that left her unable to talk and paralyzed on her right side. She surprised her doctors by relearning to walk and talk. She amazed us all by doing crewel embroidery, latch hook rugs, cooking, camping and keeping an immaculate house. She was an expert seamstress. She used her teeth and chin to hold fabric and was able to make almost all of her daughters' dresses.
She was also the caregiver in the family. If anyone was sick, they would come to Harriet's house to convalesce. To quote her grandson, "She taught us how to have strength when all the odds are against you and that hard work trumps all". We can only imagine her joy of being free from her body, hopefully singing and dancing with Dad.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Verlon, and two brothers, Peter Steffens and John Steffens.
She is survived by three daughters, Gail Burton (Jack), Pocatello, Idaho; Kay Sestak (Edward), Fairfax, Vs.; and Lynne Bybee (Wade), Renton, Wash.; her brothers, Robert Steffens, Alfred, Maine and Richard Steffens, Pocatello, Idaho;Â 11 grandchildren and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren.
At Harriet's request there will be no funeral service.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Cornelison Funeral Home, 431 N. 15th Ave., Pocatello, 232-0542. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.cornelisonfh.com.
