FIRTH — Last Friday night the Firth Cougars defense wanted to pitch the shutout against visiting Ririe.
But with a 59-0 lead in the fourth quarter head coach Keith Drake pulled his starters and put in his junior varsity players and Ririe was able to get a late touchdown.
Friday nigh on senior night the defense was again looking for the shutout.
Thanks in part to a pair not interception by Hagen Clemens, one that was returned for a touchdown and a combined five touchdowns from Connor Montgomery and Jackson Thompson the Cougars rolled to a 47-0 victory over West Jefferson.
"The kids wanted the shutout bad last week, but we got it this week" Drake said. "It was good game for them and it was a good game for the seniors, they are a great group of seniors."
The Firth defense shut down the West Jefferson running game and forced the West J quarterback to throw a combined four interceptions and a fumble.
"Defensively we played real well tonight," Drake said. "We did a good job forcing turnovers and that is emoting we are going to need to continue to do as our schedule gets tougher."
Senior running back Connor Montgomery made the most of his last game in front of the home crowd.
Montgomery got the Cougars on the board first when he hauled in an 11-yard touchdown pass from Jackson Thompson.
Wet Jefferson responded and put together a solid drive that moved the ball down to the Firth 26 yard line.
But a fumble by James Burtenshaw was recovered by the Cougars.
Montgomery capped off the ensuing drive with a one yard touchdown run.
Clemens picked off his first pass to start the second quarter and returned it 26-yards for a touchdown.
Lucas Orme had the Cougars second interception late in the quarter.
In between the interceptions, Jackson Thompson scored on a 23-yard run.
Thompson closed out the half with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Dalton Cate to send the Cougars into the half up 35-0.
After first half of a lot of offensive success, the Cougars had trouble holding onto the ball in the third quarter.
For over 10 minutes the Cougars struggled to move the ball, but in the final minutes the Cougars turned the ball over twice in the final 1:16 with a fumble and an interception.
"We have to clean up our mistakes," Drake said. "We have Salmon and North Fremont on the schedule the next two weeks and we cannot afford to turn the ball over. We will look at the tape and make adjustments."
The Cougars continued their turnover issues to start the fourth quarter as Brady Oleson muffed a punt that was recovered by West Jefferson.
But Clemens got the ball right back with an interception in the very next play.
After a touchdown pass from Brodie Cate to Connor Burkhart, Drake put in most of his junior varsity players.
But a big hit by West Jefferson Austin Barzee on a Firth running back bought the eye of Drake he marched his varsity starters right back on the field.
Montgomery scored on the next play from 33 yards out.
Montgomery finished the day with 115 on 11 carries and two touchdowns.
Thompson was 8-of-14 for 63 yards with two touchdowns through the air, he added 74 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Firth (5-1, 2-0 Nuclear Conference) travel to Salmon next week.
