Firth completes season sweep of Tigers
FIRTH — County foes collided at Firth High School on Tuesday night as the Aberdeen Tigers traveled to Firth to do battle with the Cougars.
The game certainly wasn't the sharpest of contests from either squads standpoint and in the end, it was the home standing Cougars who prevailed, earning the season sweep of the Tigers with a 61-44 victory.
"The way I look at it we just didn't play our best Cougar basketball tonight," Firth head coach Scott Adams said. "Aberdeen is a good basketball team but I thought that we had too many breakdowns on the defensive end and on the offensive end we had way too many turnovers."
First half play was ragged at best with both teams treating the basketball like it was a hot potato with a combined 21 turnovers.
Of course, Aberdeen would have taken anything hot in the first half of play because offensively they were as cold as the winter storm brewing just outside the gymnasium doors as they shot just 19% from the field in the first half of play.
Despite that, the Tigers remained in the contest however as they trailed by just ten points at the break, 23-13.
Second half scoring heated up considerably for both teams with Firth getting the better of it on the scoreboard as they pushed their ten point lead out to 17 by the end of the third quarter, in large part due to the play of Brenner Coughlan. Coughlan led the Cougar attack with a pair of second half three's as he earned high scoring honors with 13 points on the night.
Firth's low post tandem of Jacob Fielding and Quinn Alvey also proved to be key in the contest as they each scored 10 points on a night in which Fielding was saddled with foul trouble for most of the evening.
"We got some valuable game experience for kids coming off of the bench," Coach Adams said. "I believe that we are a better team than what we showed tonight but I'm happy with the win."
Aberdeen placed a trio of players in double-digit scoring with Zeke Uribe leading the charge with 12 points. Mike Wynn and Austin Horrocks each tallied 10 in the losing effort.
Firth (11-2, 2-0) will be back in action tonight as they travel to Ashton for a conference tilt with North Fremont.
Aberdeen (5-8, 0-1) will host Soda Springs on Thursday. Both games will tip off at 7 P.M.
