First CDT dinner of the year feeds 300

October 30, 2012

Morning News-Lisa Lete People of all ages and all walks of life were served taco soup, cornbread and orange sherbet for dessert by volunteers from Blackfoot South Stake at Jason Lee Memorial Church Tuesday. It was the first meal of the season served at Blackfoot's Community Dinner Table.

A delicious meal of homemade taco soup and cornbread with honey warmed the hearts and the bellies of at least 300 people at the first Community Dinner Table (CDT) dinner of the season at Jason Lee Memorial Church in Blackfoot Tuesday.
The dinner was prepared and served by volunteers from Blackfoot South Stake.
Blackfoot South Stake received a big round of applause when CDT board member Lee Hammett announced that "this is the most people served at the first meal of the season in years."
The CDT, consisting of 22 faith-based and service groups from Bingham County, serves a free meal to those who are hungry for good company and/or a home-cooked meal every Tuesday throughout the winter months.
Volunteers from Blackfoot South Stake seemed to enjoy serving the meal as much as the families and singles attending the dinner enjoyed eating it.
"I love how we can come together as a community, regardless of our religion, and enjoy a dinner like this," said Stacey McClellan. She helped organize the meal.
"This is wonderful for the community and a great service project," added Lyla Morgan, who served at the dinner.
Blackfoot South Stake volunteers do two CDT dinners each year. Those who attended the dinner are already looking forward to the next meal that they will dish up later in the season.
"This group is known for preparing a dish called Hawaiian haystacks. To die for!" commented one dinner guest.
This year, for the first time ever, the CDT will be offering a free traditional Thanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving Day from 1-2 p.m. at Jason Lee Methodist Church, for anyone who would like to come. The CDT could use some food donations and some volunteers for this dinner. For more information call 785-3611.
