Firefighter/author to sign latest novel

December 13, 2012

BLACKFOOT — Local author and firefighter Kirby Jonas is a man who has lived his dream of becoming a writer.
Now an award winning author, who has written eleven Western novels, Jonas will sign copies of his latest book “The Secret of Two Hawks” Saturday from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Stinkin’ Cute Scrapbook Shop (formerly M & H Office Supply) at 126 W. Bridge St. in Blackfoot.
Jonas, who is a native of Shelley and currently a firefighter in Pocatello, published his first book in 1994. Since then he has published eleven novels.
His latest book, “The Secret of Two Hawks,” was voted the 2010 Best Western Novel in Audio by Western Writers of America. In June 2011, Jonas stepped on stage in Bismarck, North Dakota, in front of hundreds of authors from around the country to accept this highly sought after award.
“The Secret of Two Hawks,” now a large format paperback, is based in the Blackfoot area and around Helena, Mont. For his main characters, Jonas used his local friends Austin, Michelle and Jared Clinger and retired firefighter and politician, Elmer Martinez, all of whom are portrayed in a painting that he did for the book’s cover.
Jonas said this book has special significance because his grandfather, Arch Hess, was the sheriff of Bingham County for many years when he was a young boy growing up in Shelley.
“Blackfoot definitely has a special place in my heart,” Jonas remarked.
Jonas’s fourth novel, “Death of an Eagle,” was named the number one best selling Western in the country in January 1999. His subsequent novel, “Legend of the Tumbleweed,” became Waldenbook’s number one selling book for the store’s entire region during the 1999 Christmas season. Four of Jonas’s books, have been narrated on audio by one of his childhood heroes, NBC television’s James “The Virginian” Drury.
Jonas will also sign books on January 5 at Hastings Bookstore on 17th St. in Idaho Falls starting at 1 p.m. and continuing as long as there is a crowd.
