Representatives of the Central Bingham Conservation District (CBCD) are taking tree and shrub orders orders now through April 26 for the district's annual tree and shrub sale. According to Kathy Schafer, administrative assistant for the CBCD, the annual sale is non-profit service to the community, providing them an opportunity to buy low cost trees, shrubs and mulching fabric. The sale is done in conjunction with the Snake River High School FFA team to help them raise money for the state FFA competition in Moscow.
"We've been doing this sale for many years. I order the trees and they arrive by the first week in May," she said. "We then distribute the trees at the (Blackfoot) fairgrounds with the help of the (SRHS) FFA students who earn at least $1,200 for their work."
Proceeds from the sale also go toward CBCD's educational programs in the local schools. Upcoming events include a fifth grade poster contest at Snake River Middle School and a fourth grade Arbor Day presentation at Groveland and Wapello elementary schools.
Schafer said the CBCD encourages landowners to take advantage of the sale to build windbreaks on their property. Windbreaks help with energy conservation, soil erosion, snowdrift control and wildlife habitat while increasing home value.
The sale includes assorted shrubs, shade and flowering trees, fruit trees, small fruit plants, evergreen trees, potted trees and deciduous trees and shrubs - bare root.
The CBCD will have a booth displaying some of the trees at the Spring Fair at ISU's Holt Arena in Pocatello today through Saturday where they will be accepting orders. Orders can also be done online at www.cbtreesale.com or by stopping by the Central Bingham Conservation District at 725 Jensen Grove Dr. (Suite 3) in Blackfoot.
