Dell Edwin BadHawk Sr., 77
Dell Edwin BadHawk Sr., 77, returned to the Creator on Friday, June 24, 2011, with family by his side at The Portneuf Rehab Center in Pocatello due to health complications.
Dell Edwin BadHawk Sr. was born on Jan. 11, 1934, in Poplar, Mont., to Katie Looking and Jacob BadHawk Sr. He is a member of The Fort Peck Assiniboine-Sioux Tribes. He was the eldest of 12 siblings.
As a young man he worked as a laborer in the agricultural industry.
He joined the United States Marine Corps in his teens. During the Korean Conflict, he served as a sergeant in 1951.
The Shoshone-Bannock Tribes hired him as a police officer with the Fort Hall Police Department during the late 1980s.
He was baptized and became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He enjoyed hunting, traveling, and keeping up to date on current events happening in Poplar by reading the ‘Wotanin Wowapi,’ now the Fort Peck Journal. He enjoyed attending pow-wows and listening to Native American music but some of his favorites were Hank Williams Sr., Patsy Cline and Conway Twitty.
His last place of residence was in Montpellier where he always returned to after his travels. Prior to this, he lived in Grace; Salt Lake City, Utah; Fort Hall; Nyssa, Ore., and Poplar, Mont.
He was married to Ruby Damon, then later divorced. Together they have three surviving children: Dell Guzman, James Hrabe, Curtis Hrabe, and a stepdaughter, Eva Guzman.
He is survived by his sisters, Ione (Romelio) Martinez of Firth; Josephine Lopez Guzman of Ontario, Ore.; Opie Sutherin (Phil) of Teton,; Permilia Vigil of New Mexico, and a brother, Wallace BadHawk of Pocatello as well as numerous family and friends in the western United States.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Katie Looking; his father, Jacob BadHawk Sr.; his brothers, Jacob BadHawk Jr., Gene BadHawk, Joe Guzman, and Manuel Guzman; his sisters, Marlene BadHawk, Mary BadHawk, Eve Guzman, and an infant son.
The viewing will take place at the Fort Hall LDS Chapel on Highway 91 at 10 a.m. and the burial will be held at the Firth Cemetery at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28, 2011. All arrangements are under the care of the family.
