POCATELLO — The Firth Cougars opened their 2012 2A state football playoffs on Thursday evening in Holt Arena where they scored early and they scored often in a 63-14 landslide victory over the Vikings of Valley.
It was a game of big plays for the Cougars as they scored 7 touchdowns which were longer than 20 yards including a 5 touchdown evening from 2A player of the year candidate Mitch Orme.

Orme was dominant on the evening as he amassed 134 yards receiving, 123 yards rushing and then topped it all off with an 81 yard kick return for a touchdown.
"We knew that we needed to come out and score because Valley had a good passing game," Firth head coach Keith Drake said. "We had a little bit of a slow start but once we score, we can score in bunches."
That "slow start" ended with 5:20 in the first quarter when Jake Orme plunged across the end line from a yard out for the 6-0 lead. Two minutes later Jake Orme found Brayden Boyer in the flat which turned into a 21 yard touchdown pass and the Cougars were rolling.
Firth capped the first quarter with a five yard Mitch Orme touchdown run and before most fans had reached their seats with their nachos, the Cougars led 21-0.
The game was well in hand at that point but Firth erased any doubts as to who was walking away with the win on Thursday over an 18 second span to close out the first half and begin the second.
With 0:02 remaining in the first half the Cougars executed a perfect hook and ladder with Jake Orme connecting with Boyer on an 8 yard hook. Boyer then pitched the ball to a streaking Mitch Orme who raced down the Valley sideline 57 yards for a touchdown that sent the Cougars to the locker room with a 43-14 lead.
On the opening kick off of the second half Orme took the rock 81 yards to the house and after the Valley fumble on the ensuing kick off, Firth capitalized with a 27 yard pass from Jake Orme to Connor Montgomery.
"We still have some things that we need to work on," Coach Drake said. "We get to go on though and that is what counts."
Firth (9-0) advance to a second round game between the winner of the Wendell/McCall game which will be played this evening. Date, time and place will be announced later.
