Colleen Dewey, 73
Verna Colleen Brown Dewey, 73, passed away peacefully at her home in Idaho Falls on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012, after enduring a lingering illness.
Colleen was born Sept. 1, 1939 in Blackfoot in a two-room home on Pendlebury Lane. She was the second oldest child of four children born to Walter and LaVerna Brown.
Colleen lived almost all of her life in Blackfoot. She graduated from Blackfoot High School in 1957 and then moved to Provo, Utah, where she attended and graduated from Hollywood Beauty School. It was there she met her husband, Richard Alan Dewey, who was attending BYU. They were married on Aug. 6, 1958, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They recently celebrated their 54th year of marriage.
They made their home in Blackfoot where Colleen began her long career as a beautician. Her decision to have her beauty shop in her home enabled her to raise her children while contributing to the family income. She had a loyal clientele that stayed with her for many years.
After 20-plus years, Colleen decided to hang up her comb when she and her husband started Chem-Dry Carpet Cleaning of Blackfoot and Pocatello. Colleen and her sister, LaRue worked the initial years of the business, cleaning side-by-side after which she became the company secretary, releasing the bulk of the cleaning to her husband and a small crew.
Being very ambitious, Colleen found another talent in selling homes, becoming one of Blackfoot’s most successful Realtors. Colleen was a wonderful cook, decorator and seamstress. Family and friends would always comment on how warm and inviting her home was. Upon retirement, they moved from their dream home on the Snake River, to a home in Idaho Falls to be closer to their son.
An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Colleen served in many capacities over the years including Sunday school coordinator, in the Primary presidency and most recent as a ward emergency preparedness specialist with her husband.
Colleen is survived by her loyal and dedicated husband, Richard Dewey of Idaho Falls; daughter, Clarese (Reed) Stringam of West Jordan, Utah; son, Steve (Lisa) Dewey of Idaho Falls; brother, Dean (Linda) Brown of Texas; sister, LaRue (Elden) John of Blackfoot; brother, Delbert (Bobbette) Brown of Blackfoot; six grandsons and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and LaVerna Brown.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, at the Hawker Funeral Home, 132 South Shilling Ave in Blackfoot. A viewing will be held on Friday, Nov. 9, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Hawker Funeral Home and for one hour prior to the service. Burial services will be at Grove City Cemetery.
We would like to thank Cindy, Gary and all the staff of Creekside Home Health and Hospice for their tender care and concern for both Richard and Colleen.
