Cats end Broncos season 4-2
Cole Mansanarez slides in safely under the tag by the Madison short stop on Saturday morning.
AMMON — The Blackfoot Broncos American Legion season came to a disappointing end on Saturday morning as the Eastern Division leading Madison Cats came from behind for a 4-2 win over the Broncos at Hillcrest High School relegating the Broncos to a tie for fifth in the district tournament.
"We played good ball, I thought that we played good enough to get a win today," Blackfoot skipper Jeff Katseanes said. "Madison are the number one team in their district and we had a great battle with them. We have nothing to hang our heads about."
Blackfoot got on the scoreboard first with a single run in the top of the third inning. Colby Pearson continued his hot bat as the speedster ripped a one out triple into the right centerfield gap. Moments later Pearson came sprinting home courtesy of an RBI ground out by Cole Mansanarez for the 1-0 lead.
Blackfoot added another run in the fifth inning as Cody Evans helped his own cause with a lead off single. Pearson walked to place runners at first and second and one batter later, Russell Osborn hit an RBI single through the hole on the left side of the Madison infield to score a streaking Evans all the way from second.
For starting pitcher Cody Evans it seemed as if those two runs may just be enough as the right hander was in complete control of the Madison line up through five innings of play.
The top of the sixth proved to be a stumbling block however as the Cats erupted for 4 runs in the fateful frame.
"Cody threw well," Coach Katseanes said. "Cody hasn't pitched in a while and he did a great job of keeping Madison off balance all day. Madison is a great hitting ball club and Cody was able to get ground ball after ground ball and several pop ups. I thought that Cody did more than hold his own out there."
Indeed, Evans finished the day having allowed just 2 hits over his five plus innings of work but it was the second hit that started the beginning of the end as an innocent looking infield single ignited the four run inning.
Madison took advantage of a pair of Blackfoot fielding miscues in the inning as they wrestled the lead away from the Broncos.
Blackfoot had their chances to recover in the top of the seventh inning as they were able to bring the go ahead run to the plate but Madison were able to seal the deal with a fly ball to right and a strike out to end the ball game.
"It was a great season, very successful," Coach Katseanes said. "Our record (33-12) shows just how well we played this season and every time we went out on the field we were up against the other teams best. This is a great bunch of boys and I'm very proud of them. We also have a good foundation for the future so that's exciting."
