Colby Pearson looks up field during Friday nights win at Rigby. Pearson finished the evening with 9 catches for 162 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Broncos remain undefeated on the season.
RIGBY — The dynamic duo of Trae Pilster and Colby Pearson were a lethal combination on Friday night as the tandem connected 9 times for 162 yards and two touchdowns as the visiting Blackfoot Broncos trampled all over the homecoming festivities of the Rigby Trojans.
"We knew that we could pass on them and we were able to take advantage of a few things out there," Pilster said.
"We watched a lot of film on them and we knew coming in that we would be able to pass the ball on them," added Pearson.
Early on it was the Trojans who looked like they were going to pass the Broncos out of the stadium as they connected on a 76 yard pitch and catch on the third play from scrimmage for a quick 7-0 lead.
Blackfoot was unfazed however as they responded with a 55 yard touchdown strike from Piltser to Pearson on their third offensive play from scrimmage, knotting the score at 7-7 before most of the capacity crowd had found their seats.
"I was real proud of the way that the kids responded to that quick start by Rigby," Blackfoot head coach Stan Buck said. "The play that they scored on was a well designed play and we had it covered, their kid just made a good play on the ball."
Blackfoot took the lead for good on the evening on the last play of the first quarter when Cody Averett turned in a pick six from 31-yards out for a 14-7 lead.
"We played consistent on defense and played smart which is what we want to do out there," Coach Buck said. "It was good to get that defensive score and I felt that our front seven of our defense did a great job all night."
Indeed the defense did play well, forcing a trio of turn overs on the night and with :27 remaining in the first half Austin Campbell came crashing through the Trojan offensive line and then blocked a punt setting up the Bronco offense on the Trojan 33 yard line.
Four plays later, Pilster scrambled to his left and then found Pearson in the back of the end zone with no time remaining on the clock for a 13-yard score and a 21-7 half time lead.
"The play was actually supposed to be a quick play to save time on the clock but Rigby did a good job of covering it," Pilster said. "My offensive line did a great job of buying me some time with great protection and then Colby got open in the back of the end zone and I found him. That play gave us a lot of momentum heading into the second half so it was a big play."
"We just kind of winged it," Pearson added.
In the second half, Blackfoot turned the game over to their talented defense and they responded with a stellar performance by holding the Trojans to just one score, a late touchdown in the fourth quarter after the game was well in hand.
Offensively, the Broncos worked on their kicking game as Luis Oseguera knocked home a pair of field goals, one from 26-yards out and the second from 32.
Mitch Martin also added a 2 yard rushing score early in the fourth quarter as Blackfoot improved to 5-0 on the season.
"We have a lot of room for improvement still," Coach Buck said. "We missed some opportunities out there with silly penalties at the wrong time after we had established tempo but we were able to play consistent enough to get the win tonight."
Blackfoot (5-0, 2-0) will return home Thursday night when they welcome Shelley to town for a conference showdown beginning at 7 P.M.
