Broncos trample Grizzlies 46-7 on opening night

September 1, 2012

Alonzo Ramos breaks loose for a 30-yard touchdown scamper as the defending 4A state champion Blackfoot Broncos opened their season with a resounding 46-7 win over Skyline.

BLACKFOOT — It had been fifty weeks since Blackfoot senior quarterback Alonzo Ramos had stepped foot on a football field following his gruesome knee injury in week three of last years state championship season.
On Friday night, Ramos showed no signs of rust as he accounted for 329 yards of total offense and five Blackfoot touchdowns in a 46-7 season opening drubbing of Skyline.
"All the stress built up over this past year, I just had to get it out," Ramos said. "Tonight, I felt like I had never been hurt. I still need to improve but it was just a great game."

Ramos got the Broncos on the board on their first drive as he capped an 8 play, 80-yard drive with a 19-yard touchdown scamper around the left end of the Skyline defense.
Ramos added his second score of the game on a 1-yard touchdown plunge midway through the second quarter, capping a 99-yard drive which spanned the first and second quarters for a 13-0 Blackfoot advantage.
Skyline answered back with a nice drive that had penetrated deep into Blackfoot territory. That drive stalled however when junior linebacker Camden Chidester tipped a Grayson Wilkie pass and then intercepted the ball, giving the Broncos the ball on their own 21-yard line.
The Skyline defense stiffened on the ensuing drive forcing a punt which they blocked setting the Grizz up near midfield. That good field position went by the wayside though as Wilkie was picked off for the second time in the quarter when Mitch Martin snatched the ball out of the air and then rumbled to the Skyline 37-yard line.
On the next play from scrimmage Ramos showed off his arm as he found James Korth in the corner of the end zone for a score and a 19-0 lead heading into the half.
Ramos finished the evening 15 for 22 for 261 yards and a pair of touchdown strikes.
"We're counting on Zo to be a special player for us," Blackfoot head coach Stan Buck said. "We saw a lot of bright spots tonight and we just need to continue to get better. We're looking for good things."
Out of the break Ramos and company put the game out of reach with a pair of third quarter touchdowns as Ramos rumbled for a 30-yard touchdown midway through the frame and then Ramos connected with his favorite target on the night as he found Colby Pearson for a 38-yard pitch and catch for a 33-0 advantage.
"Skyline were trying to key on Colby and they were up tight playing the run," Ramos said. "We were able to move the ball around though and that was the game plan coming in and it worked. We just have to keep working hard and take nothing for granted."
Blackfoot emptied their bench in the fourth quarter and the biggest recipient of the playing time was Kyler Haddon who carried the ball 6 times for a 117-yards and a pair of touchdowns including a 65-yard rumble down the Skyline sideline with 0:01 remaining in the game.
"I'm happy with the performance," Coach Buck said. "We did a lot of good things."
Blackfoot (1-0) will be on the road next Friday when they play Century in Holt Arena at 8:30 p.m.
