Broncos start season with a win

December 1, 2013

Blackfoot’s Aaron Vail battles with Idaho Falls Adam Craig during their season opening game at Blackfoot High School Saturday night.

BLACKFOOT — With five new starters for the 2013-14 season no one in attendance for the Blackfoot boys basketball teams season opener with Idaho Falls had any idea what to expect.

What the crowd in attendance did get was a very entertaining game that was won by the home team 64-58 thanks to some tough defense and some clutch late baskets from sophomore Taylor Pearson.
"Anytime someone puts ball pressure on you they are trying to speed you up or slow you down and they had us playing faster than we were comfortable with," Blackfoot head coach Dan Hale said. "After the first quarter I thought we did a better job of adjusting to what they were doing."
In the opening quarter the Tigers ball pressure forced the Broncos into eight turnovers and a four -point deficit after eight minutes.
Blackfoot clawed their way back whiting one at 19-19 with five minutes to play, The Tigers built the lead back up to four after a couple of free throws, but Blackfoot went on a 10-0 run over the final 3:50 of the second quarter to go into halftime leading 30-26.
"We were 2-for-12 at the free throw line in the first half, we make a few more of those we go into the half up by a lot more," Hale said. "But I was happy with the guys responded to the pressure and began to make plays and pound the ball down low."
The duo of Aaron Vail and Peterson combined for 23 low post points.
Harry Hoskins led the Broncos with 14 points.
