BLACKFOOT — For just the second time this season the Blackfoot High School volleyball team got to play a match on their home floor.
And for the second time on their home floor the Broncos got to face a state tournament team.
After falling to Idaho Falls to open the season, the Lady Broncos got to open 4A Fifth/Sixth District play with the three-time defending state champion Century Diamondbacks.
While on paper it looked like the Diamondbacks would roll through Blackfoot, for the firs two sets things were quite the opposite.
The Lady fell in three sets 26-25, 25-17 and 25-9, but despite the loss head coach Mindy Baldwin was very happy with her teams effort.
"I am so proud of these girls," Baldwin said. "I told them I don't care if you win or lose, I want to fight for every single point. No matter what happens before, the next point is 0-0 and you fight to get to one and they just did."
The opening set was a battle.
Blackfoot roared out to a 7-3 lead after a kill by Katey Turner. But as Century does, they battled back to tie the match.
The two teams traded points numerous times during the set with Century never being able to lead by more than one, while the Broncos built a 20-17 late after a kill from Holley Gunderson.
But down the stretch the hitting and blocking of the D-backs proved too much to overcome.
Early and set two it was more of the same. But a 10-0 mid-way through the set allowed Century to pull away and take the set.
During those first two sets Blackfoot gave Century its toughest match since last season's title match with Bonneville. The match also gave the fans in the crowd an exciting match an a glimpse of just how far the Broncos have come in the early part of the season.
In set three the Broncos where overwhelmed by the Diamondbacks as they cruised to a 25-9 win, thanks in part to a 7-0 run early in the set.
Gunderson and Katey Turner each had good night's for Blackfoot.
"Holly was out of her mind early on," Baldwin said. "It was glad to see her show up. If she shows up like that more often we will have a lot more success."
Blackfoot travels to Jerome on Saturday for the Jerome Invitational.
