Broncos force 5 turnovers in 45-21 win over Bees

Alonzo Ramos puts the stiff arm on the Bonneville defender during first half action at Blackfoot High School on Friday night.

BLACKFOOT — The Blackfoot defense forced 5 Bonneville turnovers and the dynamic duo of Alonzo Ramos and Colby Pearson accounted for four Bronco scores as the Blackfoot Broncos remained unbeaten on the season with a 45-21 win over the Bees.
"We knew that we would have to come out and score some points because Bonneville has some explosive kids," Blackfoot head coach Stan Buck said. "Our defense got off to a fantastic start and when your being aggressive and flying to the ball you can create turnovers. Our philosophy was to bend but not break and that's what we did tonight."

Indeed, the Broncos got off to about as good a start as anyone dared to expect as they scored a defensive touchdown on the second snap from scrimmage. The ball sailed over the Bonneville quarterbacks head and into the end zone where Austin Campbell was Johnny on the spot with the recovery and the 7-0 lead just :16 into the ball game.
The Bees responded on the ensuing drive however as they marched the ball down the field, scoring on a 33 yard pass to Chance Reese from Tanner Smith and the track meet was on.
On Blackfoot's first offensive series they showed that they were capable of driving the ball, marching the ball 70 yards down the field over the next five minutes before Austin Campbell scored his second touchdown of the evening, this time a 4 yard touchdown reception from Ramos for a 13-7 advantage.
On the ensuing defensive series the Broncos got their first of two Bee interceptions as Cody Averett picked off the Bee pass and returned the ball to the Bee 28 yard line. Moments later, Ramos connected with Pearson on a 28 yard touchdown into the corner of the end zone and Blackfoot let 19-7.
After a Bonneville score pulled the Bee's to within one score, Pearson then showcased his return skills as he set up the Blackfoot offense with a 75 yard kick off return. Mitch Martin cashed in the great field position a few plays later when he plunged across the end line from one yard out for the 25-14 lead.
After a three and out by Bonneville, Blackfoot got the ball back with just seconds on the clock but the Broncos were cool under fire as they executed the two minute drill to perfection as Ramos connected with Dallas Thompson on a 3 yard touchdown pass with just 0:03 remaining on the clock and Blackfoot sprinted to the locker room with a 33-14 lead.
After a lengthy homecoming halftime show, the game resumed in an eerily familiar fashion as Blackfoot returned the favor by fumbling their opening snap of the second half.
Bonnneville cashed that in one minute later with a 10 yard touchdown pass to Scott Simmons and suddenly it was a game again at 33-21.
Blackfoot was having none of that nonsense however because Ramos and Pearson were in sync on the next offensive possession, so much so that a 75 yard touchdown strike set the fireworks off in the north end zone for a 39-21 Blackfoot lead. Despite facing double and triple coverage, Pearson still ended the day with 158 yards receiving and a pair of touchdown catches.
"Bonneville did a good job of capitalizing on some of our mistakes but we made some big plays tonight," Coach Buck said. "There are some little things that we need to improve upon if we are going to get to where we want to be but the kids know what we as a coaching staff expect from them and we will get back to practicing hard and getting ready for next week."
Ramos put the finishing touches on victory when he executed a quarterback draw, through the Bonneville defense for a 16 yard touchdown run midway through the fourth quarter.
Ramos was the leading rusher on the night with 109 yards on 9 carries.
Blackfoot (5-0) will have a short week as they welcome Hillcrest to town on Thursday night.
